The senior citizens and the middle class of India are going through a challenging financial situation. Though rising prices and inflation have hit every citizen, the biggest sufferer remains the seniors of this country.

As there is no social security for seniors in this country, they remain dependent upon life savings or pension to take care of themselves in the sunset years. Our healthcare system remains expensive and the government healthcare system in shambles. Successive government has given little thought to this segment of society.

Rising prices are the biggest concern to the commoner. It is somewhat ironic that the only singular beneficiary of rising prices is the government. As prices go up, the tax collections increase in tandem. The ordinary person pays for the increased cost of products that benefit the trader or the seller; the increased taxes help the government.

It is rather shameful that this government, too, is doing nothing to contain the price rise. Inflation started to increase by 2019 and stands at 6.62% today with no signs of abating. The falling rupee makes imports costlier. Bank deposit rates are at their lowest in a decade or more.

What happens to a senior citizen – probably fend for his family with a daily reducing value of his saving. The situation is grim.
