Modi’s journey to 2024 has just got a bit tougher.
With the euphoria over winning four out of five states behind us, the actual results have begun to sink in. The broad smiles have turned into grins with a tinge of worry and that is becoming more visible as each day passes.
In these five state elections, the BJP retained power but did not come out unscathed. They were down 50 seats compared to the 2017 elections in these states. The only thing they can be happy about is that they did not do as bad as the Congress Party, which was the biggest loser.
Over the past few months, gone unnoticed, the BJP has been losing MLA seats across the country. The national tally of BJP MLA’s in the past two months alone is down by close to 85 seats. With elections due in another 12 states before the 2024 elections – the BJP needs to get its act in order.
The same is further amplified if one looks at the BJP Lok Sabha seats which have also been going down since 2019. This reduction is a result of losing several bye-elections.
Simple arithmetic and you will see that BJP could well face stiff competition in the 2024 elections if the opposition gets its act together. BJP remains, however, the smartest of them all, and will remain a very strong and unpredictable opponent.
